F286 Ona Šimaitė
Vilnius University Library has in its holdings the handwritten heritage of Ona Šimaitė (1894–1970), the most eminent rescuer of Vilnius Ghetto Jews, the Righteous Among the Nations (1966) and a librarian (1940–1944). The origin of Šimaitė‘s archival unit (F286) goes back to the year 1996, when Kent State University (U.S.) handed over Šimaitė‘s diaries, letters written to her by different persons and materials collected by her on various cultural topics to the Library. In later years Šimaitė‘s archival unit was supplemented with materials delivered by distinguished Lithuanian graphic artist Žibuntas Mikšys, Rimantas Stankevičius, a researcher of Šimaitė’s biography, Lithuanian photographer Kęstutis Šimas and other persons. A branch of the tree dedicated to Ona Šimaitė and growing in the Alley of the Righteous Among the Nations in Jerusalem, a declaration on documents from Vilnius Ghetto, Šimaitė’s personal documents, letters, notebooks and photos were among the delivered items.
Other archival units of Vilnius University Library’s Manuscripts Division that are dedicated to bibliographer Vladas Žukas, textologist Anastazija Kašinskaitė, museologist Valerija Čiurlionytė-Karužienė and other persons also contain some documents of Ona Šimaitė.
