Józef Kowalewski (1801–1878), orientalist, professor, alumnus of Vilnius University. His manuscripts and library are a valuable resource for the studies of Mongolian, Manchurian, Buryatian, and other Central Asian peoples' history, culture, language, and literature. This collection was to given to the University in 1883 by J. Kowalewsky's widow Ana Kowalewska.
