Documentary heritage is the mirror of every nation or country that reflects the diversity of languages, people and cultures. Lithuanian National Memory of the World Register is akin to a red list of threatened species – it includes manuscripts, books, maps, drawings or schemes, pictures and other types of documents that are most significant to the state, culture and history of Lithuania and are kept in various memory institutions around the country. Vilnius University Library, which protects several unique monuments of Lithuanian literature – Catechisms by Martynas Mažvydas and Mikalojus Daukša and other documents – joined the Memory of the World programme in 2006 and provided several dozen objects of utmost importance that were attributed regional or national significance.
